Jesus Painting
Artist's Statement
"All religions are welcome, even Aliens', as long as they don't kill," wrote a not-so-famous humorist (me). Fine by the artist. I find Jesus Christ and other central figures of the world's leading religions fascinating subject-matters. Christianity, the world's largest religion, or at least most Christians, believe Jesus, a Jewish preacher and religious leader, to be the incarnation of God the Son and the messiah, as prophesied in the Old Testament.
This very fact - the commonalities between Jews and Christians - offers the artist an opportunity to reflect on the existing bridge, rather than gap, that exists between religions. It is an opportunity for us all, citizens of the Earth, to respect each other and love each other.
Islam also revers Jesus, considering him the penultimate prophet of God and the messiah, who will return before the Day of Judgement. Take it one step further: The term Abrahamic religion groups Judaism, Christianity, and Islam together, Abraham being mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Bible, and the Quran. The artist wishes to celebrate the common roots and similarities amongst religions as much as the differences, however salient.
Even more distant religions including Indian, East Asian, and Iranian religions share common roots and similarities. The base fundamental is simple and compelling enough: it's all about faith, love, not competition, rivalries, or warfare.
I paint and create art accordingly. Some of the paintings for sales make the point. Other artworks are forthcoming.

Painting Process
It took Frederic Marsanne 10 years, if not a lifetime, to arrive at the concepts and paint such artworks as 'Mary and Mohammed' or 'Jesustein.' The process likely started when I was a kid and built momentum over the years. The Passion of the Christ, the movie directed by Mel Gibson, might have served as another ignition point.
There are several versions of Jesustein. Multiple studies exist and a Jesustein III is in the works. Prices vary widely for the artworks for sale at Marsanne Gallery (oil on canvas), but recall that it took a lifetime for the artist to arrive at these pieces. Divide the price tag by 10 or 20 (the number of years necessary to incubate and execute the works) and you arrive at a now reasonable price tag.
Frederic Marsanne's Muses & Favorites
I am sometimes asked who amongst great masters has influenced my creative output. The short answer is I don't think one, but many great artists have. I admire Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Francisco Goya, Diego Velázquez, Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer, Caravaggio, Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Hieronymus Bosch, and Sandro Botticelli.
Add Gustav Klimt, Lucian Freud, Gerhard Richter, Paul Cézanne, Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch, Damien Hirst, Robert Rauschenberg, Francis Bacon, Jasper Johns, Pablo Picasso, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Amedeo Modigliano, onto the list, which is far from exhaustive. Many of the modern artists included in this list qualify, as well.
I've traveled the world to visit art museums and other seminal institutions. The Prado, the Louvre, Orsay, Pompidou, the Vatican museums, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the National Museum of Scotland, the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, National Gallery Singapore, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Shanghai Museum, and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, are some of my favorites.
But smaller institutions like the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, the Reina Sofia: Main site in Madrid, the Musée du Quai Branly and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty Center, the Broad, and the LACMA in Los Angeles, the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, MFA Boston, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and countless smaller venues also qualify as major magnets.
The Mauritshuis in The Hague is another favorite. I have spent many hours admiring Rembrandt's Likely Last Self Portrait, amongst other masterpieces. Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft are no less fascinating.
