Artist's Statement

This is the portrait of "I Don't know whom."

"ID."

An unidentified Muslim American woman in Florida gained media attention when she sued the state for the right to wear a face veil or niqab for her driver's license photo.

We know her name, yet under the veil, her identity remains obscured—she, he, they, or someone else entirely.

While religious freedom is a fundamental right, the state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles argues for easily identifiable photographs for public safety reasons. Nonetheless, God is God.

Later, she faced conviction for aggravated battery and received 18 months of probation after twin 3-year-old girls in her foster care were hospitalized with bruises and injuries.

The niqab itself committed no crime, but the person underneath did.
